Scott Johnson
was a speaker at our Monday Morning lecture.
Below are several links that he talked about. M. Scott Johnson
is a writer, conservationist, and the Senior Outreach Representative
for Defenders of Wildlife. Fostering awareness through outreach
and education, Johnson sees himself mainly as a "teacher"
whose role is to help expand an emerging new awareness of humanity's
relationship to each other and the Earth.
Johnson, a native Arizonan, was recently picked as one of a
select group of individuals chosen to train with former Vice-President
Al Gore and his Climate Project faculty. Johnson spent three
days with Mr. Gore and his team of scientists learning about
the underlying science and emerging solutions for global climate
change. Johnson is now traveling throughout the state of Arizona
fostering awareness about climate change.
He has volunteered and worked as an activist, counselor, teacher,
composer and serves on numerous boards and technical committees.
He now lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife Jannelle and
his dog Chaco.

Defenders of Wildlife
www.defenders.org
Mr. Johnson works as Senior Outreach Representative for Defenders
of Wildlife. Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection
of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities.
We focus our programs on what scientists consider two of the
most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating
rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological
diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction. Long known
for our leadership on endangered species issues, Defenders
of Wildlife also advocates new approaches to wildlife conservation
that will help keep species from becoming endangered. Our
programs encourage protection of entire ecosystems and interconnected
habitats while protecting predators that serve as indicator
species for ecosystem health.

crisis of global warming. As a non-profit group, we work to
bring education, community information, research and citizen

of 1,000 lecturers who will present the information delivered
in An Inconvenient Truth to audiences across America.

Flora
Jessop
Flora Jessop escaped
from polygamy fifteen years ago and now lives in Phoenix,
Arizona, with her husband and two children. When she first
escaped, she turned to the Department of Child and Family
Services for protection and was sent back to the polygamy
compound and into the same cult that she asked them to protect
her from. She was severely punished for running away and spent
the next three years in seclusion, held hostage by her uncle
Fred Jessop and kept from her siblings and even from her mother.
In April, 2001, her fourteen year old little sister, Ruby,
was married to her stepbrother, Haven Barlow. Ruby also had
the courage to run away but authorities once again failed
to enforce the child protection laws they were mandated to
support. Flora has had no contact with her sister for several
years.
Flora has worked endlessly to help other young women and men
escape the Polygamist lifestyle. She has been one of the key
players in the successful prosecution of Polygamist leader
Warren Jeffs and others from Colorado City, Arizona. She has
been regularly featured on the Polygamy Diaries with Mike
Watkiss on Channel 3 in Phoenix. She has also appeared with
John Walsh on America's Most Wanted, Sixty Minutes, CNN, and
other national media.
"Damned
to Heaven,"
Prior to her talk, the one hour documentary film, "Damned
to Heaven," will be shown. It is the story of the polygamist
religious sect on the Utah and Arizona border, which was headed
by self proclaimed prophet, Warren Jeffs. Co-directors Elliott
and Gula conceived the film, which details the sexual and
physical abuses of polygamy as well as marriages of underage
girls in Colorado City, Arizona.
Elliott and Gula had the foresight to begin filming months
before Jeffs' capture came to the attention of the American
public. The documentary contains exclusive interviews with
former cult survivors, many of who came forward to tell their
story for the first time. The film premiered at the 47th annual
Krakow Film Festival in Krakow, Poland, May 31-June 4, 2007
as one of 10 (out of 300 submissions) that appeared in the
World Panorama program on human rights issues. The Krakow
Film Festival is one of the oldest and most respected documentary
film festivals in Europe.
